Charged after you cancelled

First work out which of two things happened: the cancellation did not register at all, or it registered after the billing date for that period.

Your own evidence decides this. A confirmation email, an account screenshot showing the plan ending, or a chat transcript with a date on it.

Then ask the company directly for a refund of the payment taken after you cancelled, quoting that evidence.

Give this to Feoh

Answer a few questions and Feoh works out the next step, lists the evidence to keep and writes the message for you to send.

What to gather first

  • The date and time you cancelled, and how
  • Any cancellation confirmation email or reference
  • A screenshot of the account or subscription page
  • The date and amount of the payment taken
  • Whether the payment was a card payment or a Direct Debit

What to do

  1. 1Find your cancellation evidence and screenshot the account page as it looks now.
  2. 2Check the exact date of the charge against the date you cancelled.
  3. 3Ask the company in writing to refund the payment, quoting your evidence.
  4. 4Check whether any further payment is still scheduled.
  5. 5Cancelling a card payment or Direct Debit stops future collections but does not by itself end the contract, so deal with both.

Questions people ask

Should I cancel the Direct Debit myself?
You can stop a Direct Debit through your bank, but that stops the payment rather than the agreement. Make sure the subscription itself is properly cancelled too, or you may end up in arrears.
What evidence matters most?
A dated cancellation confirmation, or anything else that shows the date the cancellation was made, such as a chat transcript or account screenshot.
